Biography

Scottish rock band Simple Minds was formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1978. The band’s founding members are Jim Kerr (lead vocals) and Charlie Burchill (guitar, keyboards). They and drummer Mel Gaynor are the core of the band. Other members are Eddie Duffy (bass guitar) and Andy Gillespie (keyboards). The band is known to begin playing New Wave but later their music transformed into U2-like epic rock, which was very popular in the 1980s. The album Sparkle in the Rain (1984) was produces by Steve Lillywhite who had worked with U2 previously. The band broke through to the American market next year. Their song “Don’t You (Forget About Me) featured soundtrack for the move The Breakfast Club. The song became the band’s only number one American hit.
