Pope John Paul II, birth name Karol Józef Wojtyła was a Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of Vatican City from October 16 1978 till April 2, 2005. He was born on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland. He became the first non-Italian pope during the last 455 years, one of the youngest Pontiffs and the first Pontiff of the Slavic origin. People connect his persona with a great time when communist era ended its existence. John Paul II was anti-communist, was against homosexual marriages and abortions. At the same time, he was aware of the contemporary technical progress and even named St. Isidorus Hispalensis to be protector of the Internet. He was also a peacekeeper sending his cardinals to Baghdad and to American President George W. Bush showing negative attitude to the war in Iraq.
