Japanese author Haruki Murakami was born on January 12, 1949 in Kyoto, Japan. He was born during the baby boom after the Second World War. He spent his youth in Shukagawa, Kobe, and Ashiya. He studied drama in Tokyo and met there his wife Yoko. They had their own business – a record store. Later they opened coffeehouse. He was influenced a lot by Western culture including classical music. When he was young he liked reading Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan. In addition he is a marathon runner and triathlete. His debut novel Hear the Wind Sing earned him the initial success and that inspired him to continue writing. He was recognized internationally after his novel Kafka on the Shore. The novel earned him Franz Kafka Prize from Czech Republic. Later he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Liège and the same from Princeton University.
