244. Manu Chao, birth name José-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao Treviño, was born on June 21, 1961 in Paris, France. He is a French Latin folk singer-songwriter and musician of Basque and Galician origin. His parent moved to France trying to escape from the dictatorship Franco regime which was ruling Spain at that time. Though Chao was born and was raised in Paris, now he lives in Marseille, Barcelona and in Brazil. He’s known as a solo musician and as a leader of the band Mano Negra. His music can be described as a fusion of rock and Latin music. He sings in many languages (French, Spanish, Galician, Portuguese and English) often mixing them in one song. He began his solo career in 1995 being backed by “Radio Bemba Sound System” band. His first commercial success was achieved with a release of his single Bongo Bong (1998).
