British indie rock and unrban folk band Hefner was formed in East London, the UK in 1995. The band’s line-up consisted of Darren Hayman (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Antony Harding (drums, backing vocals), John Morrison (bass guitar) and of Jack Hayter (guitar, pedal steel guitar, keyboards, fiddle). The band’s roots stretch back to 1992 when Hayman and Harding met each other at art school in Kent. The band began playing playing live in 1995 but due to several line-up changes it soon became a solo project of Darren Hayman. When Too Pure Records offered him a deal, he extended it on Harding and Morrison. The debut album Breaking the God’s habbit was released in 1998, but according to Hayman this is the least interesting thing to listen to due to the unreleased potential. The last album was Dead Media (2001). It differes from the previous works of the band featuring many electronic sounds and this led Darren to creating a new band called The French.
