Biography

Dar Williams (birth name Dorothy Snowden Williams) is an American folk, folk-pop and alternative country music singer, songwriter and guitarist. She was born on April 19, 1967, in Mount Kisco, New York, US. When she was nine years old, she began playing the guitar, and two years later, she started writing lyrics. When she was 23, she moved to Boston to start a career in theater. Several years later, she moved to Northampton, Massachusetts. There she performed as an opening act for the American folk and country music artist Joan Baez. She achieved mainstream success in 1993 with her breakthrough album, The Honesty Room, which received generally positive reviews from critics. It also produced her first hit singles such as "When I Was a Boy", "Alleluia", "Great Unknown", "When Sal's Burned Down" and "Babysitter's Here".
