Francesco Cilea (July 23, 1866 – November 20, 1950) was one of the most popular and influential Italian composers. He was born in Palmi near Reggio Calabria. He was surrounded by the classical music since his childhood. During this time, the Italian opera composer Vincenzo Bellini heavily influenced on him. Especially, Cilea was affected by one of the Bellini's most successful works, Norma. As a teenager, he demonstrated his precocious talent. In the late 1880s, he composed his first opera Gina. Later, he decided to move to Milan to develop his professional music skills. He came to prominence with his third opera L'Arlesiana, which was based on the play by Alphonse Daudet.
