American country, pop and soul singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry, real name Roberta Lee Streeter was born on July 27, 1944 in Mississippi, the United States. She is known as one of the first female country artists to write and produce her own material. She earned two Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1968. She moved to Los Angeles where she started her music career recording the debut single “Requiem For Love”. It was not popular. The song that boosted her career was “Ode to Billie Joe” with controversial lyrics that was liked by the public. The single was released in 1967 and reached number on the Billboard Hot 100 and charted even in the UK peaking at number 13.
