Biography

Eleonora Fagan, known better as Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer and songwriter. She was born on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the United States and died on July 17, 1959 in New York City, New York, the U.S. Holiday spend her childhood in poverty and at the age of 11 was arrested with her mother for prostitution. At the beginning of 1930s trying to earn some money legally she began singing in night clubs which were illegal, selling alchol during the the time when it was forbidden by law. Soon she gained a good reputation in the jazz world and moved to much better clubs. She rose to fame singing such slow romantic songs like Lover Man and Don’t Explain. In 1939 she recorded one of her most popular song “Strange Fruit” about lynching a black man. After 30 years Holiday faced serious health problems.
