American country music singer and songwriter Billy Joe Shaver was born on August 16, 1939 in Corsicana, Texas, the United States. At the age of 17, he joined the US Navy. After the army, he worked at different jobs including rodeo cowboy. While working at a mill, he lost his two fingers on the right hand (his dominant hand). After the recovery, Shaver self-taught how to play guitar and decided to find luck at first in Los Angeles and later in Nashville. He found a job in Nashville working as a songwriter. His works were noticed and recorded by famous artists like Waylon Jennings for example. Later, Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson began recording his songs. Shaver began his recording career in 1973 releasing his debut album Old Five and Dimers Like Me. The album quickly has become classics of the genre.
