Vera Lynn is an English singer, birth name Vera Margaret Welch, was born on March 20, 1917 in East Ham, now Greater London. Her career peaked during the WWII when she gave concerts to British troops serving abroad. She toured in India, Burma and Egypt. Her song “We’ll Meet Again” became one of the war symbols in Great Britain. She also started her radio program Sincerely Yours sending messages to soldiers who were abroad. She has become the first UK artist to top American charts. That was the song “Auf Wiedersehen, sweetheart”. This song and two others “The Homing Waltz” and “Forget-me-Not” were remarkable entries on the first UK Singles chart. Her last known public performance was outside Buckingham Palace in 1995 marking the golden jubilee of VE Day.
