Harold George Belafonte, better known as Harry Belafonte is an American calypso singer, actor and social activist born on March 1, 1927 in New York City, New York, the United States. He is often called “King of Calypso” for making this genre of music extremely popular in 1950s. He was very fond of ethnic music and such interest turned into fusion of jazz, traditional pop music and Caribbean tunes. He made his career not only as a singer, but as actor as well. He starred in such movies like Bright Road, Island of the Sun; World, Flesh and the Devil, Odds Against Tomorrow, Buck and the Preacher, Grambling’s White Tiger, Jazz '34 and some others. He received two Grammy Awards and eight Gold records. His album “Calypso” spent 31 weeks on the top of the Billboard chart.
