Brazilian musician, pianist, composer and arranger Sergio Mendes, birth name Sergio Santos Mendes was born on February 11, 1941 in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mendes is one of the most popular Brazilian artists who rose to fame internationally in the 1960s. He began playing bossa nova in the local clubs and played with many American musicians who toured in Brazil. Later he embarked on a tour around Europe and the USA and soon he decided to move in the States for developing his music career. He formed a band Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’65 who comprised Mendes (piano), vocalists Lani Hall and Janis Hansen (singer), Bob Matthews (bass), Jose Soares (percussion) and Joao Palma (drums).
