Rufus Wainwright is a Canadian-American baroque pop and operatic pop singer-songwriter. He was born on July 22, 1973, in Rhinebeck, New York, United States. He became interested in opera during his adolescent years, and the genre strongly influences his music. (For instance, the song "Barcelona" features lyrics from the libretto of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, Macbeth.) During this time, he also became deeply interested in Édith Piaf, Al Jolson, and Judy Garland. He achieved mainstream success with his breakthrough album, Release the Stars, which produced several hit singles such as "Going to a Town", "Rules and Regulations", and "Tiergarten". To promote the album, he embarked on a tour that lasted for nearly eight months, starting in London in May 2007 and ending in New York City in February 2008.
