Pixies is an American alternative rock band that was formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986, and currently consists of Black Francis, Kim Deal, David Lovering and Joey Santiago. Although their musical style has changed over time, the band is considered to be an alternative rock band alongside similar bands such as the Throwing Muses. The band draw influence from a range of artists and genres, each member came from a different musical background. Francis listened to nothing but Hüsker Dü, Captain Beefheart, and Iggy Pop. Santiago, as mentioned above, listened to 1970s and 1980s punk (including Black Flag) and David Bowie. Deal's musical background was country. The band is widely considered one of the most influential bands who didn't achieve mainstream success in their prime. They achieved mainstream success with their first album, Surfer Rosa (1988), which was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, in 2005.
