Tracy Chapman is an American Grammy Award-winning folk, blues, alternative rock, pop and soul singer–songwriter. She was born on March 30, 1964, in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S. When she was a student, she started street-performing and playing guitar in coffeehouses. Another student, Brian Koppelman, heard her playing and brought Chapman to the attention of his father, Charles Koppelman. Charles ran SBK Publishing and in 1986 signed Chapman. In 1987, after Chapman graduated from the college, he helped her to sign Elektra Records. She achieved worldwide success with her self-titled first album, in 1988. This album is hit number 1 on both the US & UK album charts. The album was also critically acclaimed and helped to launch the 1990s female singer-songwriter movement, which included artists like Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan. The first single "Fast Car" was very popular, peaking at number 5 in the US and number 6 in the UK.
