Patti Smith (birth name Patricia Lee Smith) is an American alternative rock and post punk singer–songwriter and poet. She was born on December 30, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois. She quickly gained popularity in 1975 with her breakthrough debut album, Horses, which produced the singles, "Gloria: In Excelsis Deo / Gloria (version)", "Redondo Beach" and "Free Money". At he same time, she founded Patti Smith Group. A year later, the band released its first album, Radio Ethiopia, which yielded several singles such as, "Pissing in a River", "Pumping (My Heart)" and "Ask the Angels". In the late 1970s, she released her next solo album, Easter, which peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 5 in the UK. Easter also became her most successful album to date. It spawned two hit singles, "Because the Night" and "Privilege (Set Me Free)".
