Macy Gray (birth name Natalie Renee McIntyre) is an American R&B and soul singer, songwriter and record producer. She was born on September 6, 1967, in Canton, Ohio, U.S. She is best known for her distinctive raspy voice. Her music style is influenced by the American jazz singer Billie Holiday and funk and soul singer Betty Davis. In the early 1990s, she began writing songs. During that time, she attracted the attention of the record producer and musician Joe Solo. Several years later, she signed to Epic Records and began recording her debut album, On How Life Is, which was released in 1999. This album became her real break. It produced several hit singles such as "Do Something", "I Try", "Still" and "Why Didn't You Call Me". This record also reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Top Heatseekers, Australian Albums Chart and Danish Albums Chart.
