Tomaso Albinoni (8 June 1671, Venice, Republic of Venice – 17 January 1751) was a Venetian Baroque composer. Today he is best known for his instrumental music. He is also considered as the first composer to employ the oboe as a solo instrument and the first composer to publish such works. His works caught attention of Johann Sebastian Bach who later, wrote several fugues on Albinoni's themes. Tomaso's first work (Opus 1) was dedicated to Pietro, Cardinal Ottoboni (who was also a grandnephew of Pope Alexander VIII). His following composition (Opus 2 collection of instrumental pieces) was dedicated to Charles IV, Duke of Mantua. In 1701, he composed his most popular suites Opus 3. It was dedicated to Cosimo III de' Medici (Grand Duke of Tuscany). During World War II, part of his work was lost.
