Giuseppe Verdi, birth name Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi, born on October 13, 1813 near Busseto, Italy, and died on January 27, 1901 in Milano, Italy was one of the most influential composers of the 19th century. His works were criticized ealier but in a century and a half his masterpieces dominate in the standard repertoire. Many of his operas are performed in opera houses throughout the world. First of all it’s one his greatest masterpieces Rigoletto. It’s based on Victor Hugo’s play La roi s’amuse and it reached the success very quickly. Also it’s grand opera Aida, which was intentioned to be the part of the celebration of the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 but Verdi turned down that offer. Verdi is known to be Wagner’s rival. They were leaders of the opera schools in their countries, never met each other and gave quite negative reactions on each others works.
