English jazz fusion guitarist and composer John McLaughlin, a.k.a Mahavishnu John McLaughlin was born on January 4, 1942 in Doncaster, England. He is one of the most influential guitarists of our time whose style of plying covers many different genres like Indian classical music, Western classical music, fusion, jazz and flamenco. He is praised by Indian Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain as "one of the greatest and one of the important musicians of our times". The Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 49 on their list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”. His band The Mahavishnu Orchestra is known to perform complex and virtuosic music fusing jazz and rock with Indian motifs. Many famous musicians cite him as major influence including The Mars Volta, Omar Rodriguez, Eric Johnson, Mike Stern and many others.
