Biography

Christoph Willibald Gluck (2 July 1714 – 15 November 1787; birth name Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck) was a German classical opera composer who was born in Berching, Bavaria. In the late 1730s, he moved to Italy to develop his professional musical skills. There he studied under the famous Italian composer, organist, choirmaster and teacher, G.B. Sammartini. Their relationships lasted several years. During this time, Gluck received a great amount of experience. As a result, he wrote four operas for the Carnivals of Milan. He achieved mainstream success in the early 1770s with the French opera, Iphigénie en Tauride, which today is considered as his most significant composition. It also became his finest work.
