Paul Winter is an American saxophonist (alto and soprano saxophone). He was born August 31, 1939, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA. In 1960 he founded the jazz band Paul Winter Sextet. This band won the Intercollegiate Jazz Festival in 1961. And the same year, this band was signed by Columbia Records. In the late 1960s. the band changed its name to the Paul Winter Consort. This band is well known for its contribution to the development of world music and space music. The band's album, Icarus, was released in 1972. It was produced by George Martin. Most of the musicians and artists who worked on Icarus, later went on to found the jazz band Oregon. He achieved mainstream success in 1994 with his solo album, Prayer for the Wild Things.
