Vangelis, birth name Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou was born on March 29, 1943 in Volos, Greece. He is a Greek composer of electronic, ambient, progressive and orchestral music. He has released quite a number of solo albums but he is known best of all as a film music composer. At the end of the 1970s, he composed the music for the animal documentaries. His works attracted the attention of serious filmmakers who offered him to write music for the film Chariots of Fire. The film won Oscar and Vangelis won the Academy Award for Best Original Music Score. The music was so popular that the opening theme was released as a single and it went on to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
