Biography

Arctic Monkeys are an English alternative rock and indie rock band that was formed in 2002 by guitarist and vocalist Alex Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, bass guitarist Andy Nicholson and drummer and backing vocalist Matt Helders. The band currently consists of Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Matt Helders and Nick O'Malley. The lyrics of the band's singles often feature social realism as typified by "A Certain Romance", which comments on chav and indie culture; and observations of working class life, as typified by "When the Sun Goes Down", described as a "witty, poignant song about prostitution in the Neepsend district of Sheffield". They rose to fame in 2006 with their breakthrough first album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. Its name was taken from the 1960 film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. This album became the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history. It also spawned the number-one singles, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the Sun Goes Down".
